Poppy Fundraiser
On July 1st the American Legion Auxiliary held our first annual poppy drive at two prime locations in our town of South Windsor. Five members were set up at the Stop and Shop while three others were dividing and concurring at the Geissler's Supermarket two miles down the road.
We started the day with 200 poppies total, leaving each location with 100. After being set up for about two hours, we realized we were going to run out of our supply of poppies. The crew at Geissler's were the first to run out, quickly followed by the Stop and Shop crew. To all of our surprise people were more than happy to give donations even though they wouldn't get a poppy in return. At stop and shop when someone noticed that they were about to receive our last poppy they would tell us to keep it and give it to someone else. The generosity of people was definitely shown to us on this day.
After three hours at each location we came together to see how we each had done. Each person had an idea of the goal that we would reach before the fundraising was completed, and I think it is fair to say that all of us were surprised when we realized that we had raised over $600. Not too bad for a couple of ladies on our first annual poppy drive!! The next step of the fundraiser is to find a veteran who is in need in our community who can benefit from our endeavors.
Progress is being made within our unit and it is finally coming to the point where we are beginning to be able to stand on our own two feet. Even with the positive progress, we still have the Legion Post to lean on if we need them. It was highly appreciated by all of the Auxiliary members that we were able to have some of the Legion members sit with us and give us advice and pointers on how to approach our fundraisers in the future. Since we have not done these kinds of events before, any kind of helpful hints are highly appreciated.
I hope that everyone has been able to enjoy the ease of this website so far and the updates that I am trying to provide. These blog updates are just to fill everyone in who are unable to be in attendance, so I hope that they are able to do that as well. It is crazy to think that it is already the second week of July, this year is flying by so quickly! That just means that our meetings will come up quicker on us! I hope you all have enjoyed this update, I will see you all in a few weeks!
